Michelle Rollman

Working in the areas of sculpture, drawing and performance, Michelle Rollman is an artist whose work has been shown in numerous exhibitions including Gallery Paule Anglim in San Francisco, Clementine Gallery in New York, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, New Langton Arts in San Francisco, the New Orleans Center for Contemporary Art, and at Marjorie Wood Gallery.  Her work is in the collections of the New Museum in New York, and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco.  Her work has also appeared on the cover of Dodie Bellamy’s “Cunt Ups,” and in the anthology, “Biting the Error; Writers Explore Narrative” edited by Mary Burger, Robert Gluck, Camille Roy and Gail Scott.  She has performed in Poets Theater events by Kevin Killian, Camille Roy, Carla Harryman and Leslie Scalapino and in the work of Philip Horvitz.

Michelle currently lives in rural New Jersey and enjoys her horse and the wildlife.

Her stylized renditions of animals at play have made Michelle Rollman an underground legend. In The Book of Practical Pussies, Rollman has asked some like-minded artists and poets for texts to illustrate her perverse and extraordinary vision. Rollman's seductive, frisky, psychotically enhanced cats betray vestigial memories of their former lives as humans; in luxury and squalor, they lounge around, show their tempers, display the sexual parts of the bodies they used to inhabit. Odd couplings and trios adorn the pages of this book, and the stories and texts Rollman celebrates take an equally askew view of the world. Designed by Wayne Smith, the book features work by D-L Alvarez, Dodie Bellamy, Lee Ann Brown, Bob Gluck, Kevin Killian, Scott MacLeod, Yedda Morrison, Camille Roy, Jocelyn Saidenberg. The project is a one of a kind co-production between Tender Buttons and Krupskaya Presses.
